AT&T today announced via its public policy blog that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless, and the Department of Defense to explore the idea of sharing spectrum. The agreement follows recommendations made by the NTIA last year that the option be used as an alternative to new spectrum auctions. The companies will test sharing a 95MHz slice of airwaves between 1755MHz and 1850MHz, which is currently used by the DoD. The testing will be carried out over the next couple of months, and is expected to be completed by the end of March. The tests will include monitoring, sharing, and simulations at five locations specified by the DoD to see if DoD activities are harmed or disrupted by nearby base station activity. The results will be shared by the Commerce Spectrum Management Advisory Committee when ready.

AT&T is pleased to have recently joined into an MOU with our fellow carriers, Verizon and T-Mobile, and the U.S. Department of Defense to test the viability of sharing 95 MHz of spectrum that is currently used by DoD and other federal agencies.  This spectrum is located in the 1755 to 1850 MHz spectrum band, which NTIA has analyzed in great detail for potential clearing and sharing opportunities.

Sony confirms its My Xperia smartphone recovery service, starts limited trials

Sony confirms its My Xperia smartphone recovery service, starts limited trials

Sony piqued its fair share of interest when it trademarked the My Xperia name for an online service -- what could it do in the cloud that it hadn't already done? Tracking lost devices, it seems. The now-official My Xperia service trial gives Sony phone owners the equivalent to a recovery tool like Find My iPhone or the early form of HTCSense.com, letting them pinpoint a missing Xperia and ping it, lock it down or wipe at least some of its data. Be ready for a very gradual launch, however. The very first wave of tests involves just Xperia acro S users in Nordic countries, and the trial will expand only to 2012 smartphones in the region that are still running Android 4.0. Those of us further abroad will have to wait for the eventual worldwide expansion if we want to easily find that Xperia S buried between the couch seats.

Why the Z10 and Q10 will not save BlackBerry

BlackBerry Q10 and Z10
Two words: false prophets.
BlackBerry is betting its future on the Z10 and its new OS, but they won't be enough to prevent the company's inevitable demise
By every standard, the BlackBerry Z10 is the best smartphone that BlackBerry (formerly RIM) has ever produced. It's a massive upgrade in terms of design, user experience and technology. I welcome the departure of the home button in favor of gestures. So let me first give credit where credit is due: BlackBerry has built a decent phone. The Q10 isn't bad either, if you're a die-hard fan of QWERTY keyboards.
Building decent hardware isn't what matters most about a smartphone, though. And for those of you who think software is the most important component of a smartphone, you're also wrong.

What makes or breaks a smartphone are the apps. And in that area, BlackBerry is still sorely lacking. That's not to say BlackBerry hasn't done everything short of delivering the moon to attract developers -- they have. BlackBerry claims 70,000 apps, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype, Rdio and Rovio's Angry Birds (soon).
That's still just 8.75% of Apple's massive iOS app library, though (800,000). Android has just as many apps. Even Microsoft has north of 150,000 and has shown a willingness to spend the money necessary to get app developers on board.
So let's do a headcount of the apps that are missing from BlackBerry: Camera+, Google Maps (BlackBerry's default offering sucks), Pandora, Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Spotify, Instagram and Snapchat.
Of that group, Instagram and Snapchat are the most important. Why? Because they're the ones that appeal most to the younger generation of smartphone users. Just follow your 10-year-old cousin on Instagram and you'll quickly realize that this is the way she communicates.
But that's not even the biggest problem, because BlackBerry will eventually get Instagram. The issue is this: when a new application sweeps the teenage market (Snapchat, Tinder, etc.), it will always come from iOS and Android, because that's where all apps begin. Out of those 70,000 apps BlackBerry is boasting, how many of them are exclusive? That number will never be very high, and that matters more than anything else.

For BlackBerry to survive, it needs to find a way to grow. It can't simply retain its existing subscriber base and expect to stick around as a company, because it doesn't have the resources or scale to fend off an eventual acquisition. And I tend to agree with S&P Capital IQ analyst James Moorman's assessment of the BlackBerry 10: "We believe the new devices will do more to retain existing Blackberry subscribers than to lure new subscribers."
BlackBerry fans are going to savage me for this column, but here's what I want you to do before you start screaming at me in the comments: find a group of 10-year-olds (a dozen is fine) and ask them, "If I had an iPhone, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry to give you, which phone would you want?"
And that, my friends, is why the Z10 and Q10 will not save BlackBerry.

The popular smartphone became available again in Germany earlier today, and it will now ship from the U.S. Google Play store to buyers in one to two weeks. Google also added Canada to the lineup.
The Nexus 4 is now back in stock in the U.S. Google Play store.
Germany isn't the only country getting more Nexus 4 inventory today. The popular Google smartphone is now available in the U.S. and Canadian Google Play stores, as well.

The device, which costs $299 for the 8GB version or $349 for the 16GB model, will ship in one to two weeks for U.S. buyers, the site says. That's a big improvement from the recent wait times, as well as the general unavailability of the device. The phone earlier today also became available again in Germany, and it hit Canada shortly after arriving in the U.S. Google Play store.
The LG Nexus 4 has been selling out pretty rapidly since its November launch, with users forced to wait many weeks for the device to ship or to even show availability online. The smartphone is one developed closely with Google, giving a pure and polished experience with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, as CNET reviewers have noted. However, it also lacks 4G LTE capabilities, though that doesn't appear to be hurting demand for the device.
The Nexus 4 sold out in less than half an hour the day it was released in mid-November.
A Google executive last month blamed LG for the shortage, saying supplies from the company have been "scarce and erratic." The company at the time vowed to improve the situation and said it should have good news to share shortly.

Nokia has committed another $250 million to its venture funding firm Nokia Growth Partners (NGP), and expanded its activities into China.
NGP was set up in 2005 to boost the mobile ecosystem around the world and will use the third round of funding from its parent company to invest in mobile companies in the US, Europe and Asia .
Nokia executive vice president and chief financial officer Timo Ihamuotila said the latest funding “reinforces Nokia’s support for a vibrant mobile ecosystem and our determination to collaborate with industry innovators to build great mobile products”.
The firm appointed David Tang as managing director of the Chinese arm of its business with Lu Guo as principal.
Tang has advised several Chinese mobile businesses and has worked with NGP when he was vice chairman of Nokia China. He joins from AMD. Lu Guo joins from Keytone Ventures where he was responsible for mobile internet investments.
NGP managing partner John Gardner said the firm sets itself apart from pure financial investors due to the “partnerships and insights our invested companies get from their close association with Nokia”.
In the past year, NGP has overseen the IPOs of image processing software maker Morpho and Inside Secure, which produces technology for secure transactions and digital identity.
There have also been sales of text input company Swype, IT hosting provider Netmagic and integrated circuit maker Summit Microelectronics, which was acquired by Qualcomm.
