HTC is eyeing a follow-up to the Droid DNA.

 

A successor to HTC's Droid DNA phone is in the works, says HTC Chief Marketing Officer Ben Ho.
Speaking with reporters on Monday, Ho said that HTC would soon launch a second-generation Butterfly to take advantage of consumer appetite for large-screen smartphones, the Focus Taiwan news site reported.

The current 5-inch model is known as the Droid DNA in the U.S., but flies by the name of Butterfly in Taiwan and elsewhere.

Whatever its name, the current phone has seen robust demand and healthy sales, especially in Japan and Taiwan. Butterfly topped the iPhone 5 as the best seller for Japanese carrier KDDI during the week of Dec. 10 through 16, according to Focus Taiwan.

Carriers also ran into trouble trying to keep up with demand.
Taiwan carrier Chunghwa Telecom said in January that its stock was far behind the 40,000 handsets that customers had ordered. Fellow carriers Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone Telecommunications also reported difficulty filling orders.

However, Ho said that production shortages have been resolved. The HTC executive revealed no details about the successor to Butterfly, but confirmed that the new phone would retain the same name.

The launch of the HTC One has been stymied by a limited supply of cameras.
HTC chief marketing officer Benjamin Ho confirmed the component shortage in an interview with the Wall Street Journal yesterday.
"Our friends in the media have been asking why there has been a delay in shipments for the new HTC One, whether there is a component shortage," Ho said. "There is some shortage, because the phone's camera was designed specifically for us, and production cannot be ramped up so quickly."
Ho's comments echoed those of an "unnamed HTC executive," who told the Journal last week that the phone would be delayed because of trouble getting parts for the camera. But the unnamed exec also pinned the blame on HTC's falling status among suppliers.

 

"The company has a problem managing its component suppliers as it has changed its order forecasts drastically and frequently following last year's unexpected slump in shipments," the executive said. "HTC has had difficulty in securing adequate camera components as it is no longer a tier-one customer."
On Friday, the company announced that the HTC One would finally pop up in the U.K., Germany, and Taiwan this week, followed by North America, Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, and most other markets by the end of April
Ho was frank about HTC's failure to generate enough marketing buzz about its phones.
"We have a lot of innovations but we haven't been loud enough," Ho told the Journal. The company plans to drop its "Quietly Brilliant" tagline as part of a move toward a bolder marketing strategy. HTC will also devote more dollars to promote its products, upping its 2013 digital marketing budget by 250 percent from last year, and raising its spending on traditional media marketing by 100 percent.
The HTC One has already garnered a fair number of positive reviews, including MYLAN CELLULAR'S own take on the phone.

But HTC has been overshadowed by Samsung, which has thrown a great deal of weight into promoting its flagship phones, notably the new Galaxy S4.

Samsung launched the Galaxy S4 with a big Broadway-style event in New York City on March 14. HTC managed to get a playful bite of the action beforehand, offering Pringles chips and bottled water on HTC-branded trays to the many people waiting to get into the event.

We have heard rumours that the itself rumoured high end  HTC Windows Phone, the HTC Zenith, has been cancelled, and the leaked specs of the rumoured HTC Tiara, due later this year, with its WVGA screen and 8GB of storage, are also not very inspiring.

With all these rumours we do have one fact – HTC is not planning to launch a high end Windows Phone handset this year.

Speaking to omio, Phil Roberson, head of HTC UK and Ireland, said there will be only the HTC One.

“Last year we had the X and the S, where people had different personal preferences between the two. We just said, let’s just create one flagship device for this year,” he said.

When asked  “So, there won’t be any more HTC something’s this year?”

Roberson replied – “No; this is The One”.

HTC has already intimated that Windows Phone will not support the camera innovations in the HTC One, and that their Windows Phone sales have not met their expectations.

With the HTC Tiara already leaked, the news in some ways does make it easier for future Windows Phone buyers, making it clear if you want a new high-end Windows Phone there will be no point looking beyond Nokia.

HTC finally unwrapped the HTC One, its newest flagship device intended to challenge the likes of Samsung Galaxy S II and LG Optimus G and also a hugely important device aiming to change the dynamics for HTC. Sporting a premium metal unibody design, HTC One is boasts a 4.7 inch 1080p full HD display with a resolution of 468 pixels per inch.
Powered by 1.7GHz quad core processor and 2GB of RAM, this phone also comes with 2,300mAh battery as well as a new “ultrapixel” camera. On the downside, it does not have microSD slot for storage expansion. Instead of promoting the high end specs in this phone, HTC’s marketing strategy is to promote some key features that the company has introduced to distinguish it from other Android smartphones.
Among the interesting features is the “UltraPixel” camera that comes with a program called Zoe that “gives people the ability to shoot high-res photos that come to life in three-second snippets” and that “automatically creates integrated highlight films from each event… set to music with professionally designed cuts, transitions and effects.”
HTC is also emphasizing on its new BlinkFeed interface which “transforms the home screen into a single live stream of personally relevant information such as social updates, entertainment and lifestyle updates, news and photos with immersive images so that people no longer need to go to separate applications to find out what’s happening.”
Another highlight is the HTC BoomSound introduced for the first time on a phone, front-facing stereo speakers with a dedicated amplifier and an amazing full HD display that immerses people. I think everyone can agree that HTC makes some brilliant products, but 2012 was not kind to it and it needs to turn things around or risk ending up like Palm did a few years ago. One of the things I recently suggested is broad carrier support, and the current rumor surrounding the M7 Android device is that the major US carriers will all get the device. This was the hope with the HTC One X, but that did not happen, and HTC's planned One-series campaign appeared to fall flat in the US. The M7 looks promising and may be the first step to HTC getting back in the saddle again.
If the M7 is indeed a real device, then it is highly likely we will see details announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February. Images that appear before then are likely the device in different prototype stages so I wouldn't put much faith into what we are seeing being the final shipping product. According to DroidDog the specs look just about perfect with a 4.7-inch 1080p display, quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 13-megapixel rear camera, and more. The 32GB storage is great as long as this is the minimum that appears on all carriers. I still wish for microSD, but if 32GB and 64GB variants are offered then I am fine with that. The Droid DNA is awesome, except for the lame 16GB integrated storage limitation that is just unacceptable for a high-end smartphone.
February should be exciting to see what HTC, Samsung, Nokia, LG, Motorola, and others have in store for the Android and Windows Phone platforms.
