Cracking Open the Samsung Galaxy S4

With its 1080p screen, 13-megapixel camera, and quad-core processor, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is packed with impressive hardware. On this episode of Cracking Open, I explore the phone's redesigned interior and show you why it is easier to disassemble and repair than its predecessors.

Despite its larger screen and new internals, the Galaxy S4 is nearly identical to last year's Galaxy S3 model in size, shape, and external design. The new phone has a 5-inch display with a resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels at 441ppi. Our AT&T version has a 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 processor from Qualcomm, 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 16GB of built-in storage, a microSD card slot, an 18-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, NFC support, and even an IR blaster so you can use it as a TV remote.

A variant without LTE is available with Samsung's own 1.6GHz eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor. And buyers in South Korea, the phone maker's home country, will even be able to get an LTE version with a 1.8GHz version of the Exynos 5 Octa processor.

For more information on the Galaxy S4, including real-world tests and pricing information, check out Mylan Cellular's full review.

And not only does the new Galaxy have some of the most impressive specs among Android handsets, it's one of the easiest to disassemble and repair.

Cracking Open observations

Easy to crack open: Because the battery is user-replaceable, the back cover can be popped off with just a fingernail. After removing a few Phillips screws, you can pop the internal circuit board cover off with a thin plastic tool, metal blade, or the aforementioned nail. And voila, you're inside the phone.

Redesigned interior: Compared with the Galaxy S3, Samsung redesigned the interior of the S4. The main system board is located at the top of the handset instead of the bottom. The battery compartment has been shifted down. And instead of a single board running the length of the phone, the S4 has a main board and a daughter board.

More discrete internal components: I criticized Samsung for joining several of the Galaxy S3's internal components with a single ribbon cable and gluing that cable to the front-panel assembly. Because of this construction method, if one part broke you had to replace all the attached parts. The S4 does have a few component clusters, but they are smaller and more localized -- no long ribbon cables.

Fused front panel and display: As is common with modern smartphones, the Galaxy S4's front panel and actual display are fused together. If one breaks, you'll likely need to replace both.

Replacing front panel/display assembly: And you'll need to remove all the other internal components in the process.

Bottom line

Having cracked open the original Galaxy S, S2, S3, and now the S4, I'm impressed by the hardware improvements and design refinements Samsung has made with each new model. The S4 is a worthy addition to the Galaxy line, and it's one of the easiest phones to disassemble that I've worked on in a long time.

Details show that this flagship Sony smartphone will support T-Mobile's newly launched LTE network as well as pentaband HSPA+. In addition to the standard fare of photos and test results, the docs reveal the user manual and features such as Wi-Fi calling.

First announced in January at CES, the Sony Xperia Z has yet to find a home in the United States. Hardware specifications include a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, a 13-megapixel rear camera, 2GB RAM, and a 2,700mAh battery. Powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the water- and dust-resistant handset is strong enough to compete with the likes of HTC, Samsung, and LG.

Neither T-Mobile nor Sony have confirmed plans to offer the Xperia Z, but we can surely expect some noise soon.

cheap used cell phones-New Windows 8 specs could open door for 7-inch tablets

New Windows 8 specs could open door for 7-inch tablets-cheap used cell phones

The Windows 8 display specifications now allow for a minimum resolution of 1,024x768, a change from the previous 1,366x768.

Microsoft's move to relax the minimum resolution for Windows 8 devices could trigger a slew of seven-inch Windows 8 tablets.
An update to Microsoft's Windows Certification Newsletter, uncovered by Ed Bott of sister site ZDNet announced the change in the required resolution for Windows 8 tablets.
To claim Windows 8 certification, a tablet can now offer a minimum resolution of 1,024x768 at a depth of 32 bits. That's a change from the previous guidelines, which specify a minimum resolution of 1,366x768. Microsoft said it isn't encouraging device makers to shoot for such a low resolution but noted that "partners exploring designs for certain markets could find greater design flexibility helpful."
Tablets with screens larger than seven inches typically offer a resolution much higher than 1,024x768. In contrast, smaller tablets naturally tend to use use smaller resolutions. Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire both offer resolutions of 1,280x800, while Apple's current iPad Mini is stuck at 1,024x768.
Reading between the lines, Microsoft seems to be laying the groundwork for smaller Windows 8 tablets. That's a smart strategy given the popularity of seven-inch tablets.
Apple's iPad Mini has scooped up sales from its larger Retina Display counterpart. Smaller Android tablets such as the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire have helped Google's mobile OS steal more of the market away from the iPad. It seems time for Microsoft and its partners to carve out a slice of all that seven-inch tablet action.
A resolution of 1,024x768 does offer one problem in the world of Windows 8.
The snap app feature, which lets users snap two Modern apps side by side, requires a resolution of 1,366x768. Therefore, any tablet vendors who sell 1,024x768 Windows 8 devices must alert potential buyers that the snap app feature won't work, at least not without an external display.
But the upcoming Windows Blue may offer a solution to this dilemma.
Microsoft is reportedly tweaking the snap app feature to let 1,024x768 devices display two apps side by side, says The Verge. Devices with higher resolution would be able to display four apps next to one another.

cheap used cell phones-New iPhones Still Expected to Launch in June/July, Fingerprint Sensor for iPhone 5S?

New iPhones Still Expected to Launch in June/July, Fingerprint Sensor for iPhone 5S?

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a new research report claiming that Apple is expected to unveil its iPhone 5S and lower-cost iPhone alongside iOS 7 this June, with the devices coming available in July. Versions supporting the time-division duplexing (TDD)standard used by China Mobile are said to follow in September.
We expect Apple will introduce its new iPhones and iOS7 in June, and start shipping the new iPhones (5S and low-cost model) in the FDD version in July. Both dates are earlier than last year’s roadmap. We attribute this to: (1) an effort to avoid repeating the fatal mistake of last year of the delayed iPhone 5 launch, which gave competitors room to grab market share; and (2) the new iPhones this year are mainly designed on the basis of the current iPhone 5, which suggests development time could be reduced.
Kuo says that all of the new iPhone models, including the lower-cost iPhone, will support LTE, with differentiation coming in other specs.
[W]e expect the product differentiation between iPhone 5S and iPhone 5 will be: (1) computing power, with iPhone 5S to run on the faster A7 application processor; (2) the camera, with iPhone 5S being equipped with Smart Flash, ensuring photo quality using white or yellow flash according to lighting conditions; (3) iPhone 5S will have a fingerprint chip under the Home button, improving security and usability; and (4) the low-cost iPhone 5 hybrid casing of fiberglass and plastic will make it lighter and slimmer than general plastic casing and easier to make in various colors. However, we still think it will be heavier than iPhone 5S, which will have an aluminum casing. Thus, even form factor will be an area of differentiation.
kuo_iphone_5s_july
Kuo's iPhone claims are very similar to ones he laid out in his 2013 Apple product roadmapback in mid-January, but the fresh report suggests that Apple is still on track and his fresh comments on a TDD iPhone suggest that Apple may indeed be very close to bringing the iPhone to China Mobile, the world's largest carrier.

Kuo has a rather solid track record, having accurately predicted a number of Apple product announcements in recent years. As a result, his research reports have been followed with increasing interest.
