REDMOND, Wash. -- Perhaps the most telling detail of Microsoft's media event to unveil the new Xbox One was the fact that the company didn't even get around to talking about gaming until halfway through the presentation.

It's hard to overstate the significance of that. Microsoft sees the Xbox One, more than any other version of the Xbox, as a device for everyone, not just hardcore gamers. There's no doubt Microsoft was pushing into that direction, even with the original Xbox that debuted in 2001.

But Microsoft's focus during the Xbox One event demonstrates the company's bid to secure a digital hub in living rooms from which consumers will use all sorts of other Microsoft technologies. It's the centerpiece of Microsoft consumer devices and services strategy.

When Don Mattrick, the president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business group, took the stage today, he talked first about the company's efforts to "harmonize" the living room, where technology remains "fragmented." Those are the marching orders for the Xbox One.

"Team Xbox is on a new mission," Mattrick said, adding that the console is the "ultimate all-in-one-home entertainment system."

 The entertainment group's chief marketing officer, , put the Xbox One through its paces, demonstrating just about everything but its gaming capability. While he noted that the company would go into more detail on games at next month's E3 gaming convention in Los Angeles, his focus on TV viewing, video conferencing, and music listening are key to understanding the strategic significance of Xbox One.

"What if a single device could provide all your entertainment?" Mehdi asked. "What if it was always ready and connected?"

With voice-recognition technology developed by Microsoft's research group, Mehdi turned on the console with the words, "Xbox on." He quickly navigated to viewing "The Price is Right" by saying, "Watch TV." To hear music, he said, "Go to music." The Xbox One snapped from entertainment experience to another in a flash.

The non-gaming demo didn't stop there. Internet Explorer is baked in to let users surf the Web. The Net is weaved into Xbox apps so that fantasy sports fans can watch a football game, for example, and watch how their fantasy team is doing in real time, with their scores updated the instant a player runs for a touchdown or kicks a field goal.

Mehdi showed off integration with Microsoft's Skype video conferencing technology, which Microsoft acquired two years ago, too. Xbox One users will be able to have video calls with Skype right from their sofa.

 To enable Skype and all sorts of other voice and gesture commands, critical for the non-gaming applications, Microsoft is requiring its Kinect controller for every Xbox One.

"The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform," according to an FAQ Microsoft posted regarding the Xbox One. "By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you."

The new Kinect, which comes with every Xbox One, has been completely redesigned. Its field of view is some 60 percent larger. That allows as many as six people to fit into the field of view, rather than the two allowed by the current Kinect. What's more, it works better in smaller rooms because people can be closer and still fit in the frame.

Microsoft eventually did get around to talking about games at the Xbox One debut. An EA executive trumpeted new sports titles, and an Activision boss gave a demo of its upcoming Call of Duty: Ghosts. More gaming titles certainly will come. But make no mistake, gaming for the Xbox One is only part of the strategy. Microsoft wants this next Xbox to be core of consumers' entertainment world.

There are narratives circling the technology business that are carrying out their welcome. the first one, and also the one wherever I would like additional intelligent voices would prevail, is that the narrative that there will solely be one winner during this business. particularly that for Google’s scheme to win, Microsoft and Apple should fail. Or that for Microsoft’s scheme to win, Apple and Google have to be compelled to lose. And in fact for Apple to win, Google and Microsoft have to be compelled to lose.

Perhaps this narrative is best encapsulated in the latest Nokia Lumia smartphone TV ad, which showcases the apparent epic battle between iPhone and Android users. As funny as the commercial is, average consumers — the ones that make up the target market — really don’t care which phone you or I use. Last year I wrote a column on that very subject called I Chose the iPhone, You Chose Android — So What?

As far as I can tell, these narratives are rooted in not only a limited view of the technology industry’s history, but also in a very short-sighted one. It seems as though since Microsoft’s Windows platform dominated much of computing for several decades, it must mean it’s inevitable that this domination repeat itself. It seems the expectation from many is that we are simply waiting to see which platform wins. More specifically, which platform will dominate computing market share the way Microsoft did in the past. Let me explain why this is not going to happen.

The reason I say the “one platform to rule them all” narrative is deeply flawed is because when Microsoft dominated computing, the market was very small from a global standpoint. The market for PCs back then was tiny compared to today’s market for smartphones, for example. Small markets favor fewer players who typically dominate the segment.
The global consumer market for technology is massive. Massive global consumer markets can sustain many players, competing for segments of markets, and all making money.

Look at how many automobile companies the global consumer market can sustain. Look at how many clothing companies, types of aspirin, types of cereal, etc., the market can sustain. Believing that for Google to win Apple has to lose – or vice-versa – is like believing that for Pepsi to win, Coca-Cola has to lose; for Burger King to win, McDonald’s has to lose; for BMW to win, Mercedes-Benz has to lose. We all know how silly that sounds — and that’s the point.

Interestingly, even though a few major conglomerates own many of the underlying products that make up the variety I mention, each product’s success often transcends the company itself but is wrapped into a larger experience. This larger experience is bound to something central that’s key to that company’s sustainability in the global consumer market: its brand.

Now, if we must get into a discussion about who has the best chance to win or lose, I would argue that it’s not the platform we should be looking at, it’s the brand.

Brands Rule the World

When you look at the global consumer market, you simply will not find a company succeeding and competing on the basis of a product which does not have a strong brand. A strong brand stands out. It is recognizable. It leads to continually high customer satisfaction, loyalty and trust. A strong brand continually re-creates an enjoyable and memorable experience for its customers.

When a company builds a brand that the global consumer market considers valuable, it puts itself in a lasting position. Nike, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Coke, Pepsi, McDonald’s, etc., are not in danger of going out of business anytime soon. To predict their demise is as ridiculous as predicting the demise of the strong global consumer brands in the technology industry. Of course, not all brands survive. We have countless examples of mismanaged companies, who lacked the foresight to disrupt themselves and invest in the future. But the time it takes for a brand to unravel is much longer than it is for a company without a strong brand.

A strong brand is not just sustainable, it is also versatile. Brands compete well in their own markets but a strong brand also allows a company the ability to compete in new markets with new products. A strong brand is one of the strongest, most defensible assets any company has. It is one of the foundational things that often gets overlooked in many analyses.

It’s time to re-think the importance of winners and losers in the technology industry. It’s time to take a more holistic look at who is well positioned to still exist in 20, 30, 50 or even 100 years. Products come and go, but brands have the best chance at standing the test of time.

Like a shop owner anticipating Christmas in July, Samsung Electronics is this morning touting new technology it claims will allow it to usher the world into the 5G era by 2020. If you can stand to wait seven years, the company’s talking about core “adaptive array transceiver” technology that delivers so-called fifth generation speeds “up to several hundred times faster” than today’s 4G networks.

What’s that translate to in download speeds? Up to “several tens of Gbps per base station,” says Samsung, adding that this could allow users to sling around vast data files and ultra-HD movies “practically without limitation.” (In other words, Shazam!)

The new technology reportedly solves limitations with millimeter-wave bands (operating at high frequencies) transmitting data over long distances due to atmospheric attenuation. (I don’t pretend to understand the atmospheric physics, but it involves, among other things, radio signals and the resonance of oxygen molecules, as well as “rain fade,” where radio signals are absorbed by ice, rain and snow.) Samsung says it’s been able to successfully work around this by using 64 antenna elements transmitting data at 1.056GBps at a frequency of 28GHz for up to 2 kilometers (a little over a mile).

All well and good, but before we get all rapturous about downloading ultra-HD content in a blink, let’s revisit an arguably bigger problem we haven’t solved still, today — a problem higher speeds will only exacerbate.

Imagine you’re zipping down the Interstate, and say the speed limit’s 80 m.p.h., but you’re — did I say zipping? — actually creeping along at half that because, you know, two lanes and rush hour — a real bumper-to-bumper slog. That’s what my smartphone’s data connection sometimes feels like living in a college town, say on (football) game day, during any of the city’s big summer festivals or, you know, when school’s in primetime session seven months a year.

The trouble’s not that my 4G smartphone or tablet connection isn’t fast enough (in theory) to instantly stream high quality videos and music — even a 3G connection’s capable of competently handling services like Netflix or Spotify, after all — it’s that these connections often live down to worst-case expectations because the towers are simply overcrowded.

The reason cell service providers are putting the kibosh on unlimited data plans (and raising usage costs for their real bugaboo, data tethering) has as much to do with crowd control as scraping a little extra from our purses. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: The faster you make mobile communication technology, the more likely people are to use it and the more likely the network’s going to choke.

When it’s not choking, there’s the data threshold question: A few weeks ago, someone I know sent me a short link to a video. I was at a park on my smartphone and clicked the link expecting YouTube to appear. Instead, the browser clocked for a few seconds, then stopped. I tried the link again, got the same thing and gave up. A short time later, my phone started popping text alerts: first that I’d exceeded 50% data usage, then 75%, then 90%. I panicked and reset the phone, called my carrier to investigate, then realized what must have happened: the person sending that email was linking to an actual mongo-sized video file, but since it was in a format my smartphone didn’t recognize, the download process happened in the background. By clicking that link, I’d initiated a multi-gigabyte data burn, thus wiping out most of my family plan’s monthly allotment in well under an hour (as well as clogging up my phone’s remaining free local space).

Accidents happen, shame on me, and lesson learned, but you get the point: not only did the phone fail to indicate it was downloading something, but my lightning fast 4G connection turned a molehill into a mountain in no time flat — a mistake that, had I not reset the phone and terminated the background download, might have cost real money (to say nothing of my ability to use the phone’s data capabilities until the monthly cycle reset).

As long as we have data thresholds that trigger financial penalties, as long as towers are congested by increasing numbers of data users accessing ever larger files and data streams, and as long as we’re trying to do all that on devices with paltry local storage, it won’t matter how fast the motor goes. I wish we’d hear less from companies like Samsung about how magical things are going to be in six or seven years, and more about how they’re working to solve data capacity issues and prohibitive usage thresholds today. I’d happily trip along at 3G speeds through 2020 and beyond if they were dependably 3G, all the time, and let me work — phone, tablet, laptop, whatever — without worrying about usage penalties.

Apple could make history tomorrow with its biggest second-quarter sales yet, though it's also expected to log its first decline in profit in 10 years.
That's what analysts anticipate in Tuesday's second-quarter earnings report, which will spell out the company's performance through the end of March.
Wall Street is expecting Apple to post earnings of $10.12 per share on sales of $42.6 billion, based on a poll of 48 analysts from Thomson First Call. That's down from earnings of $12.30 per share, and up from the $39.2 billion in sales from the same quarter a year ago.
Apple's own expectations for profits during the quarter came in between $9.23 and $10.23 per share on sales of $41 billion to $43 billion.

The last time Apple posted decline in profit from the previous year's quarter, it was the very beginning of 2003, and Apple was hit both by the economic downturn and a restructuring charge that ate away at its profits, and then some.
Decline in profit aside, the revenue both Apple and analysts are expecting would be a new second-quarter record. Wall Street expects that to be led by sales of around 35 million iPhones and 17 million iPads -- the company's two most popular products, both of which were revamped last fall. Trailing those, analysts believe Apple sold a little more than 4 million Macs, fueled by shoppers catching up on purchases of the latest iMac, which was in short supply at the end of last year.
One of the key reasons a decline in profit is expected is Apple's gross margins, the amount of money it makes on its products. In January, the company estimated a gross margin of between 37.5 percent and 38.5 percent for the quarter. At best, that margin is about the same as Apple's last quarter, but a steep drop from the 47.4 percent it reported a year ago. During a previous earnings call, Apple noted that some of this was due to the iPad Mini having tighter margins, as well as a weaker dollar, but that things could improve as the company brings down costs.

Shares of Apple have dropped 44 percent since reaching a high of $702.11 seven months ago, bringing the company's stock price down to territory it hasn't seen since December 2011. During a meeting with shareholders in February, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that he was not happy with the stock's performance, but said the company was focused on the long term and making the very best products. That was after pressure from an outside shareholder urging Apple to sweeten the deal for current shareholders with a plan to dole out fixed, recurring dividends that could be traded separately from Apple's stock.
Of note, this quarter will be the first since Apple changed the way it estimates its earnings. The company was well-known for comically lowballing its forecast, something that became more of an issue after a string of record-setting blowouts fueled by the iPhone and later the iPad. Apple went nearly a decade without posting a miss, a party that ended in October 2011 when Apple sold less iPhones than expected, due to a longer than usual wait between models. More recently, the company just barely missed Wall Street's revenue estimates for its December quarter, though beat expectations on profits and set new sales records for its products.
During its last conference call with analysts, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer noted that the company was moving from a set number to a "range of guidance that reflects our belief of what we are likely to achieve."
Some other things to pay attention to on the post-earnings conference call with analysts:

• The big delay between product launches. Apple's last big product unveiling was last October, with the iPad Mini. It's been very quiet since then, short of Apple tweaking its high-end MacBook Pro models.
• Dividend talk. Apple's cash pile continues to grow, and at last count it was a little more than $137 billion. Apple already has a dividend and stock repurchase plan, but has said it's in discussions about how to return more cash to shareholders. In a note to investors last week, Sanford Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi said not to hold your breath for news about this during Apple's conference call, but you can bet someone's going to ask for a progress report.
• Rumors, rumors, rumors. Expect analysts to ask questions about things Apple won't answer. That includes talk of a new iPhone just around the corner, and whether it's buying audio chips from someone other than Cirrus Logic, a company that last week trimmed sales estimates based on "a decreased forecast for a high-volume product" believed to be from Apple, which uses the chips in iOS devices.
• China fallout. Apple was recently the target of a national campaign in China to improve its warranty practices in the region. The company eventually apologized, and promised to change its ways, including improvements. Analysts could be curious how much of an impact that's having on its business there.

The first quarter results put Nokia firmly behind its market rivals Apple and Samsung, despite the company selling 5.6 million Lumia handsets, a 27 per cent increase on the previous quarter.

The disappointing figures coincided with a Financial Times report that Nokia was seeking to move into the "phablet" market, offering customers a Nokia-stamped alternative to products like Samsung's popular Galaxy Note device, which boasts a 5.3" screen and sells particularly well in Asia, where phone/tablet hybrids are most used.

Lumia would be at the forefront of this change of direction, and a range of devices would be planned in the phablet niche, reportedly with "more advanced specifications" than those of the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Meanwhile, overall net sales fell 20 per cent to 5.9 billion euros from a year earlier at Nokia, while phone volumes tumbled 30 per cent on the previous quarter.

It forecast margins in its devices and services business would be "approximately negative 2 per cent" in the second quarter, down from a weak 0.1 per cent in the first quarter.

"The shortfall is in the (cheaper) mobile phone side, where both volumes and average selling prices came lower than expected. That is of course a bit worrying, since that has been their bread and butter business in the Devices and Services unit," Hakan Wranne, analyst at Swedbank, told Reuters.
"I think we will see the market's profit estimates for 2014 come down," he added.
Stephen Elop, Nokia's Chief Executive, said, "At the highest level, we are pleased that Nokia Group achieved underlying operating profitability for the third quarter in a row. While operating in a highly competitive environment, Nokia is executing our strategy with urgency and managing our costs very well. We have areas where we are making progress, and areas where we are further increasing the focus. For example, people are responding positively to the Lumia portfolio, and our volumes are increasing quarter over quarter. On the other hand, our Mobile Phones business faces a difficult competitive environment, and we are taking tactical actions and bringing new innovation to market to address our challenges."

The tech monster allegedly hired students to write contradictory comments on social networking sites about HTC phones, PC Advisor reported.

Taiwanese website, TaiwanSamsungLeaks.com published documents from Samsung's chartered marketing firm which listed the number of different posts it had been responsible for last year. One of the mails recorded comprised a complaint that his girlfriend's HTC One X telephone smashed into certainly and an claim that Samsung's Galaxy Note was a better merchandise.





The article furthermore listed reconsiders asserting that the Samsung Galaxy S3's had better graphics and battery life than the HTC One X.


Samsung said it had not obtained a notice from Taiwan's Free Trade Commission but accepted the contradictory promotion crusade was an "unfortunate incident" that had gone against its "fundamental principles".

"Samsung Electronics Taiwan (SET) has stopped all trading undertakings that engage the posting of anonymous comments," it said in a statement.

Verizon's Samsung Galaxy S4 page is finally live, giving America's largest wireless carrier a way for folks to get in line for what's been the most anticipated new phone of this year so far.
Earlier in the week, Verizon Wireless tweeted that the GS4 would be hitting its 4G LTE network in May and promised that more details would soon be forthcoming.

 

 

The sign up page that went live this week on the Verizon Wireless site doesn't offer any of those details, it's just a place to enter your e-mail and thereby consent to being spammed by the carrier about all things Samsung.
Being the big dog on the wireless block, Verizon apparently doesn't feel a need to be first with what's expected to be a pretty hot new phone. Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile will have the Galaxy S4 in stores later this month, and AT&T has already been taking pre-orders for a few days now.
No word yet on pricing from Verizon either, but it's likely to be in the range offered by its competitors, which includes a $149 promotion for some new Sprint customers that bring their old number over to the carrier, on up to the full retail price of $639.

It’s been two years since the LG released LG Optimus 3D P920. With high-end features, this smartphone was able to grab attention of many. The hardware features of this smartphone are good even as of now, but not the software features. The Froyo operating system that you get in LG Optimus 3D P920, is quite old now. If you own this device, then you must be interested in installing Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean on it, right? If this so, then do read out the guide ahead.

Disclaimer

If you have ever gone through the task of rooting and custom ROM installation, then only proceed ahead. Though the process mentioned ahead is quite simple to follow, but still, if this is your first time with rooting and custom ROM installation, then better stop here. If you still want to read the process and apply it, then do it at your own risk. We shall not be held responsible for any damage that occur to your device.

Prerequisites

• Take the backup of entire data. Though this is optional, but all out of you who have ever done rooting before, must be familiar with its importance.
• Make sure that the battery is charged for 85 percent at least.
• Enable the USB Debugging Mode in your device. For this, navigate to Menu > Settings > Applications > Development and then check the ‘USB Debugging’ there.
• Make sure that you have all necessary USB Drivers installed on your PC/Laptop.

Install JellyBam Android 4.2.2 Custom Jelly Bean ROM on LG Optimus 3D P920

• Download the JellyBam Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean custom ROM from here.
• Copy the file, and by connecting your device with PC using the USB cable, paste the file to SD card of your phone. After that, disconnect your phone.
• Switch off your LG Optimus 3D P920.
• Start your device in Recovery Mode by pressing volume up + home and power buttons together. The screen will go blank on the appearance of LG logo on it for second time. Now, use the Volume buttons to navigate and Power button to select.
• Navigate to “install zip from SD card” >> “choose zip from sdcard”.
• Now you need to select the file from the no. of options available. In these options, which are actually the files and folders of your Android device, look for the ROM file that you downloaded in the first step.
• Once you get it, use the Volume keys to highlight. Confirm the selection by using Power button.
• The installation of the selected file will begin. Wait for few minutes for the completion of installation.
• Install the Google Apps package by following the same procedure.
• Select the option “+++++Go Back+++++” and then “reboot system now”.
• Your LG Optimus 3D P920 will restart now.

That’s it. You have successfully installed JellyBam Android 4.2.2 Custom Jelly Bean ROM on LG Optimus 3D P920.

   Telus Galaxy S4 pre-orders seem to be going well, as the carrier is ready to offer some early buyers a $50 bill credit if they agree to wait “up to two weeks to receive” their purchased handset.
   
   The Galaxy S4 is described as “so popular” by the carrier, which is trying to manage its “restricted supply” on launch date by offering selected customers this particular deal.
   
   The Galaxy S4 is available with Telus for $199 with new three-year contracts, or $700 outright, and it’s now available for pre-order. The pre-orders should be delivered on April 27, while in-store purchases will be available starting with May 3. However, should customers accept Telus’ limited offer, they’ll get their pre-ordered units by May 10. Here’s the full e-mail notification some Telus Galaxy S4 buyers received:

   Interestingly, Telus suggests in its email that there may not be enough Galaxy S4 units to go around on launch date, in “Canada and internationally,” although we don’t know exactly what that means for now, as there haven’t been any reports detailing any potential launch issues for Samsung. In fact, we’ve seen so far various estimates for upcoming Galaxy S4 sales all looking very well for the company, with one of the latest such guesses saying that Samsung would sell as many as 10 million units at launch, and move 30 million units by the end of June.
   
   On a different note, a few days ago Telus revealed that it will stock the Galaxy S4 in different colors in the future, in addition to the White Frost and Black Mist versions that will be available at launch.

When buying a smartphone, there are dozens of different factors to consider, especially if you’re trying to decide between a few popular phones that seem like essentially the same thing, just with different packaging. Looked at a list of specs lately? Quad-core, 2GB RAM, 13 megapixels, 4.7/4.8/5.0/5.5 inches, LTE, NFC, and other three letter words.
What sets one phone apart from another? If recent launches are any indication, smartphones are due to have longer and longer lists of features to differentiate themselves from the competition.
Good features can make or break a smartphone, but not all features are worth your time and they definitely should not influence your buying decision. Here are the most egregious offenders.

1. More megapixels

Two years ago the fanciest smartphones boasted 5 megapixel cameras. Last year’s number? 8MP. Now the 13MP phones are coming and aren’t you impressed? You shouldn’t be. We went through this same scenario over in the camera world and the problem is the same here.
More megapixels does not equal a better camera or better pictures. The iPhone 4 [iPhone 4S] had a 5MP camera that put many 8MP Android phones to shame. The Galaxy S III and the HTC One X both had 8MP cameras, but HTC took superior pictures. Specs alone aren’t going to tell the whole story. What makes a good smartphone camera is a combination of a quality sensor and a good camera app that tweaks things behind the scenes to give you the best shot possible.

2. Camera features that don’t improve picture (or video) quality

A wealth of settings in the camera app is a definite plus, but some smartphone makers are going overboard with image and video features that aren’t necessary and don’t make images look any better. Recent examples include HTC’s Zoe (introduced with the new HTC One) which takes multiple pictures plus a few second video every time you press the shutter button andthe dual camera recording feature found on the LG Optimus G Pro and the Galaxy S4. Even the highly touted 1080p video recording isn’t impressive if you’re not going to watch it on a 1080p screen or, if you do, the quality is so bad you wish you’d left it on your phone.
Don’t shop by these features. Look for camera enhancements that will improve how images look in the end. High-end smartphones that have fast lenses (f/2.0 or lower) will deliver better shots, but also look for camera apps with settings that allow you to change the exposure and white balance, include HDR (High Dynamic Range), and have scene modes.

3. Audio enhancements that are more trendy than transcendental

With a wealth of apps available that allow you to stream and download your favorite music, more people are using phones as their MP3 players. With that comes a desire for better audio quality. Thus, some manufacturers tout their audio prowess, like HTC including Beats Audio in their flagship phones. The secret is that Beats Audio is little more than a set of equalizer settings, and therefore all you need is a good third-party EQ app like Equalizer EQ (free in Google Play or  iTunes) to improve the output on music, video, and even games.

4. Extra buttons you don’t need

Ever since Android 3.x Honeycomb Google has tried to convince phone and tablet manufacturers to give up on buttons. Android devices no longer need physical Home, Back, or Menu buttons, since these functions are now on the screen. Does that stop the likes of Samsung, HTC or LG from including them in their designs? Nope. This isn’t a bad thing in itself–some would argue it’s a good thing–but when phone makers start adding even more buttons, they move into the territory of unnecessary.
Camera shutter buttons aren’t too bad, but buttons like LG’s QButton on the Optimus G Pro just get in the way. The QButton launches QMemo by default, even though you don’t really need such quick access to that app. Users can change which app it does launch, but that doesn’t eliminate the real problem: there’s no need for an extra, in the way button that launches apps.

5. Features that only work if you and everyone you know has the same phone

Gone are the days when almost everyone with a smartphone had the same smartphone. Be it the halcyon years of BlackBerry dominance or the early days of the iPhone. Even popular Android phones can only achieve a certain amount of market saturation on their own. So picking a device based on the cool things it can do, if those cool things only apply to one other device, means you’ll hardly ever get to do that cool thing.
Samsung touted the Galaxy S4′s Group Play feature as a way for a group of friends to enjoy music together and improve the sound quality. Problem is, that feature only works on the S4. It may work with the next-generation Galaxy Note and a few other premium phones from the company, but not the Galaxy S 3 or the Galaxy Note 2, even though both are quite popular.

6. Futuristic gestures and motions that aren’t intuitive and that you’ll never use

For years futurists have predicted a world where technology requires little more than a hand-wave or voice input to get amazing results. The road to that amazing future is apparently a long one, and along the way we’re due to be bombarded with stuff that looks like it came from “Minority Report” when actually it’s more like “Amazon Women on the Moon.”
Waving your hand above the screen to swipe left and right is cool, but it’s not better than just swiping left or right with your finger. Talking to your phone to make calls, schedule appointments, and search the web feels like science fiction until the text-to-voice engine doesn’t understand you, can’t translate without a connection or can’t interact with the app you need. And, finally, the jury is still out on the recently-introduced eye tracking feature. It didn’t work well for us in bright light situations, but when it did work, it was really useful.
Overall, when shopping for smartphones, be on the lookout for hype. Flashy features rarely add up to anything, so keep in mind what’s important in a phone: comfortable design, good display, long battery life and software features that match what you want to do with your phone.

If you listened to our lovely podcast this week you’ll have heard us discussing the various merits of the Samsung Galaxy S4, in particular, VS other (cheaper) handsets like the Google Nexus 4.

I really like my Nexus 4. I like stock Android, it’s whizzy fast and does everything I need well. That said, I’ve always been a fan of Samsung’s display technology their screens are just beautiful, and the extra whizz bang features on the Galaxy S4 appeal to me.

Then they’re the price… the Galaxy S4 is very expensive. £579 sim free That’s MORE expensive than an iPhone 5. Ouch. So why would I swap? Well, here’s a list…

Better camera

Better display

Better battery life (I get battery anxiety big time with my Nexus 4)

Expandable storage

Removable battery

(Slightly) larger screen

It controls my TV!

Some (not all) of the Samsung specific stuff looks cool.

 

Also Samsung’s accessories range look great. I particularly like the case with a hole cut out so you can see the time, and other useful information without even opening it. Our friends at MobileFun have a whopping great page of accessories and that’s for a phone that isn’t even out yet!

The S4 is almost guaranteed to sell by the bucket load. That in itself means there will be great support for the handset by accessory makers of all types.

Then there’s Google I/O, which may well bring a lovely shiny new version of Android. I fully expect Samsung to update the S4 as soon as possible, but the Nexus 4 should get it almost immedaitely. I have no idea what it will bring, but it might be great! Oh, decisions, decisions…
