Financial analyst RBC Capital Markets has trimmed full year estimates for Nokia's Lumias sales from 32 million to 30 million, citing lacklustre feedback on the company's new hero devices, the Lumia 928 and 925.

In a note to clients on Thursday, RBC wrote that it was more likely than not that Nokia "may negatively preannounce its second quarter results over the next weeks", with a loss of three percent for its devices and services business, compared with Nokia's own outlook of a two percent loss, plus or minus four percentage points.

Nokia has said it expects Lumia sales in the second quarter will at least beat the 27 percent quarter-on-quarter growth seen in the first quarter, when it shipped 5.6 million Windows Phones. Consequently, it's expecting to sell 7.1 million this quarter.

However, RBC's forecasts are lower, and the analyst expects Nokia to only sell seven million. With Symbian in the mix, it should sell 7.5 million smartphones altogether.

Nokia's latest Lumia 928 and 925 appear to be "compromise devices", whose specs don't measure up to Samsung's flagship Galaxy S4 and HTC's One. Another problem Nokia is facing, according to RBC, is higher than normal return rates for its Lumia devices.

"[We are] trimming our CY13 devices estimates. Nokia appears to be a step behind the competition in introducing compelling smartphones with excitement around the Lumia now replaced by what we believe may be higher than normal return rates," the analyst wrote.

Meanwhile, Nokia's feature phone business is being hammered by cheaper Android devices such as Samsung's Galaxy Star in markets where its feature phones were traditionally popular.

The bottom already appeared to have fallen out of Nokia's feature phone sales in the first quarter, due to the arrival of low-cost Android smartphones that outshone its S40-based Asha range.

RBC lowered its full year estimate for Nokia's feature phone business from 218 million to 196 million device shipments.

Nokia declined to comment on the RBC report when contacted.

KGI expects the iWatch to have a two-inch touch display, and the biometric software raises a world of possibilities. If the smart watch becomes successful, it might prove stiff competition for the markets existing crop of wearable sensors. Where the iPhone made it unnecessary for you to carry a pocket camera (or even put a GPS device in your car), an iWatch might make a calorie counter seem like just one more thing to slip or clip on in the morning. And you’ve got to figure than an iWatch will be able to display emails and other things that an average calorie counter can’t.

Not everyone is on board with this rumor. A Gartner analyst was quick to question the veracity of this claim (or any Apple rumor). At any rate, whether the iWatch will have the same success as the  iPhone (or any success) at all is debatable. It’s hard to tell what people will think of it, given that the smart watch hasn’t even been announced, but initial research suggests that, for the moment, consumers are fairly cool to the idea.

Microsoft's Don Mattrick at the unveiling of the new Xbox One video game console at the software giant's Redmond, Wash., campus.

REDMOND, Wash. -- Perhaps the most telling detail of Microsoft's media event to unveil the new Xbox One was the fact that the company didn't even get around to talking about gaming until halfway through the presentation.

It's hard to overstate the significance of that. Microsoft sees the Xbox One, more than any other version of the Xbox, as a device for everyone, not just hardcore gamers. There's no doubt Microsoft was pushing into that direction, even with the original Xbox that debuted in 2001.

But Microsoft's focus during the Xbox One event demonstrates the company's bid to secure a digital hub in living rooms from which consumers will use all sorts of other Microsoft technologies. It's the centerpiece of Microsoft consumer devices and services strategy.

When Don Mattrick, the president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business group, took the stage today, he talked first about the company's efforts to "harmonize" the living room, where technology remains "fragmented." Those are the marching orders for the Xbox One.

"Team Xbox is on a new mission," Mattrick said, adding that the console is the "ultimate all-in-one-home entertainment system."

 The entertainment group's chief marketing officer, , put the Xbox One through its paces, demonstrating just about everything but its gaming capability. While he noted that the company would go into more detail on games at next month's E3 gaming convention in Los Angeles, his focus on TV viewing, video conferencing, and music listening are key to understanding the strategic significance of Xbox One.

"What if a single device could provide all your entertainment?" Mehdi asked. "What if it was always ready and connected?"

With voice-recognition technology developed by Microsoft's research group, Mehdi turned on the console with the words, "Xbox on." He quickly navigated to viewing "The Price is Right" by saying, "Watch TV." To hear music, he said, "Go to music." The Xbox One snapped from entertainment experience to another in a flash.

The non-gaming demo didn't stop there. Internet Explorer is baked in to let users surf the Web. The Net is weaved into Xbox apps so that fantasy sports fans can watch a football game, for example, and watch how their fantasy team is doing in real time, with their scores updated the instant a player runs for a touchdown or kicks a field goal.

Mehdi showed off integration with Microsoft's Skype video conferencing technology, which Microsoft acquired two years ago, too. Xbox One users will be able to have video calls with Skype right from their sofa.

 To enable Skype and all sorts of other voice and gesture commands, critical for the non-gaming applications, Microsoft is requiring its Kinect controller for every Xbox One.

"The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform," according to an FAQ Microsoft posted regarding the Xbox One. "By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you."

The new Kinect, which comes with every Xbox One, has been completely redesigned. Its field of view is some 60 percent larger. That allows as many as six people to fit into the field of view, rather than the two allowed by the current Kinect. What's more, it works better in smaller rooms because people can be closer and still fit in the frame.

Microsoft eventually did get around to talking about games at the Xbox One debut. An EA executive trumpeted new sports titles, and an Activision boss gave a demo of its upcoming Call of Duty: Ghosts. More gaming titles certainly will come. But make no mistake, gaming for the Xbox One is only part of the strategy. Microsoft wants this next Xbox to be core of consumers' entertainment world.

Like a shop owner anticipating Christmas in July, Samsung Electronics is this morning touting new technology it claims will allow it to usher the world into the 5G era by 2020. If you can stand to wait seven years, the company’s talking about core “adaptive array transceiver” technology that delivers so-called fifth generation speeds “up to several hundred times faster” than today’s 4G networks.

What’s that translate to in download speeds? Up to “several tens of Gbps per base station,” says Samsung, adding that this could allow users to sling around vast data files and ultra-HD movies “practically without limitation.” (In other words, Shazam!)

The new technology reportedly solves limitations with millimeter-wave bands (operating at high frequencies) transmitting data over long distances due to atmospheric attenuation. (I don’t pretend to understand the atmospheric physics, but it involves, among other things, radio signals and the resonance of oxygen molecules, as well as “rain fade,” where radio signals are absorbed by ice, rain and snow.) Samsung says it’s been able to successfully work around this by using 64 antenna elements transmitting data at 1.056GBps at a frequency of 28GHz for up to 2 kilometers (a little over a mile).

All well and good, but before we get all rapturous about downloading ultra-HD content in a blink, let’s revisit an arguably bigger problem we haven’t solved still, today — a problem higher speeds will only exacerbate.

Imagine you’re zipping down the Interstate, and say the speed limit’s 80 m.p.h., but you’re — did I say zipping? — actually creeping along at half that because, you know, two lanes and rush hour — a real bumper-to-bumper slog. That’s what my smartphone’s data connection sometimes feels like living in a college town, say on (football) game day, during any of the city’s big summer festivals or, you know, when school’s in primetime session seven months a year.

The trouble’s not that my 4G smartphone or tablet connection isn’t fast enough (in theory) to instantly stream high quality videos and music — even a 3G connection’s capable of competently handling services like Netflix or Spotify, after all — it’s that these connections often live down to worst-case expectations because the towers are simply overcrowded.

The reason cell service providers are putting the kibosh on unlimited data plans (and raising usage costs for their real bugaboo, data tethering) has as much to do with crowd control as scraping a little extra from our purses. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: The faster you make mobile communication technology, the more likely people are to use it and the more likely the network’s going to choke.

When it’s not choking, there’s the data threshold question: A few weeks ago, someone I know sent me a short link to a video. I was at a park on my smartphone and clicked the link expecting YouTube to appear. Instead, the browser clocked for a few seconds, then stopped. I tried the link again, got the same thing and gave up. A short time later, my phone started popping text alerts: first that I’d exceeded 50% data usage, then 75%, then 90%. I panicked and reset the phone, called my carrier to investigate, then realized what must have happened: the person sending that email was linking to an actual mongo-sized video file, but since it was in a format my smartphone didn’t recognize, the download process happened in the background. By clicking that link, I’d initiated a multi-gigabyte data burn, thus wiping out most of my family plan’s monthly allotment in well under an hour (as well as clogging up my phone’s remaining free local space).

Accidents happen, shame on me, and lesson learned, but you get the point: not only did the phone fail to indicate it was downloading something, but my lightning fast 4G connection turned a molehill into a mountain in no time flat — a mistake that, had I not reset the phone and terminated the background download, might have cost real money (to say nothing of my ability to use the phone’s data capabilities until the monthly cycle reset).

As long as we have data thresholds that trigger financial penalties, as long as towers are congested by increasing numbers of data users accessing ever larger files and data streams, and as long as we’re trying to do all that on devices with paltry local storage, it won’t matter how fast the motor goes. I wish we’d hear less from companies like Samsung about how magical things are going to be in six or seven years, and more about how they’re working to solve data capacity issues and prohibitive usage thresholds today. I’d happily trip along at 3G speeds through 2020 and beyond if they were dependably 3G, all the time, and let me work — phone, tablet, laptop, whatever — without worrying about usage penalties.
